Frequently Asked Questions About Black Pearl

What weather should I expect in Palau?

Palau enjoys a stable tropical climate year-round, with air temperatures ranging between 24–32°C (75–89°F). From November to April, the islands bask in a relatively dry season, making it the ideal window for a diving liveaboard holiday. The wetter months run from July to October, bringing short-lived tropical showers that rarely disrupt diving. Thanks to its equatorial location, Palau is seldom affected by typhoons, so prolonged rainstorms are rare. Expect warm sea breezes, balmy evenings, and reef-friendly humidity—perfect for both adventure and leisure.

The high season in Palau spans December to January, when clear skies, calm seas, and mild currents attract the highest number of travellers. This period offers excellent conditions for divers looking to explore the best dive sites like Blue Corner or Ulong Channel, while enjoying spacious cabins, comfortable weather, and the heightened activity of reef ecosystems. Booking early during these months is recommended, especially for securing preferred cabin layouts and diving gear rentals

How are embarking and disembarking organized?

Reaching Palau is part of the journey; it’s a true escape. Located east of the Philippines, this Pacific island nation is accessed primarily through international flights landing at Roman Tmetuchl International Airport in Koror. Connections are limited, so depending on your departure point, you may need multiple flights. If you're unsure about the most efficient route, our team is happy to assist with flight recommendations.

Embarkation begins at 3:00 PM local time on the first cruise day. Prior to your trip, you'll be asked to submit a Guest Information Form, including your arrival and departure details. Transfer instructions are provided 14 days before the cruise or immediately upon late booking.

Airport pick-ups are available on embarkation day for US$25 per person and must be confirmed in advance.

Hotel transfers from the Koror–Malakal area are free and arranged between 3:00 and 3:30 PM.

Disembarkation occurs at 8:30 AM on the final day. Guests are transferred either back to their hotels or directly to the airport. Please note that liveaboard do not provide transport to locations beyond the airport

I have special dietary requirements. Will this be a problem?

Not at all. Guests with dietary needs, from vegetarian options to vegan preferences or allergy concerns, are welcome to note these in the reservation or cruise forms. While the meals onboard are fresh and diverse, Palau’s remote location may limit access to niche ingredients. If your dietary needs are highly specific, we recommend bringing those items with you. Boat's chefs will do their best to accommodate requests within logistical limitations

What payment methods are available onboard?

Payments can be made: In cash: USD only (notes from 2013 or newer).
By credit card: Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Union Pay, and some American Express cards

Will I have phone or internet signal onboard?

While the open ocean provides world-class diving, it does take you off the grid. There is no Wi-Fi or Starlink internet aboard M/Y Black Pearl. However, physical SIM cards are available for rental onboard, offering basic data coverage for messaging and email (but no video calls). You may also consider eSIM options that function in Palau, just ensure your device supports eSIM technology

What diving experience level is recommended for this itinerary?

Palau’s dive sites, ranging from reef shark sightings to spawning aggregations during full moons, require strong situational awareness. Fleet recommends a minimum of 50 logged dives and an Advanced Open Water certification.
If you’re still building experience, we offer three tailored solutions:
-Private dive guides, available upon request for an extra fee
-Advanced certification courses completed onboard
-Preparatory dive sessions before your trip
A Refresher Dive is recommended if you haven’t logged dives in the past 6 months. All guests must complete a check-dive, and the Cruise Director may restrict certain dives based on your ability, especially during high-current events like snapper spawning

New luxurious boat, great staff, lots of animals
This beautiful boat is new with all of the latest technology and comfort. The staff goes above and beyond to be helpful~ they rinsed and hung our gear for us on the last day! Gabriel gives informative briefings that not only talk about the sites but also teach about the animals and the history of the area. Plenty of places to relax comfortably. Great food! The only tiny downside is that there is a charge if you want anything to drink besides coffee, tea or water. The cost for a soda or alcohol is rather high BUT Nitrox was free. Most of us had a bar tab. Two dives with lots of mantas, tons of sharks and turtles, plentiful fish and coral

Sold as a luxury experience, but average at best - only saved by extremely diligent Cruise Directors watching out for guests!
BOAT: Brand new boat, great upper deck for yoga/rest area, great gear deck, great common area for meals. Bar upstairs or BBQ not used once during the trip. ROUTE: Not enough distance covered by main boat. Instead, up to 45 mins dingy trip up to dive sites - even running out of fuel in one occasion. Main boat didn't go anywhere near south of Palau. No significant weather event to justify not moving with main boat - only reason was to save $ on fuel. They took us to one island for breakfast - even though there was a BBQ area that could be used. Last day is cut short with only two dives and justified by the "ride back to Koror" - but the ride took less than 1 hour and we spend the last 12hrs in the cruise anchored at Koror harbor. FOOD: Very average food, buffet style. Broken fridge was used as an excuse for subpar meals. 3x same Steak dish, 3x same Tuna dish, lots of chicken nuggets, lots of canned vegetables, little to no fresh fruits or vegetables. No special meal for New Year's Celebration, same buffet style with similar food as all other days. Jokes were made about lobsters not being served on NYE due to broken fridge - being so close to main harbor fresh food could have been brought during downtimes with third dinghy to solve supply chain challenges. Cappuccino machine was broken, also a let down on the luxury experience mention by many. CABIN: Not enough hooks to hand towels or swimsuits. TV configurations in Chinese or Korean - unable to connect our own tablet/laptop since unable to read instructions to change config. BATHROOM: Clogged showers, very slow to drain (had to shower standing on inches of water). No exhaustion mechanism for toilets. Only "superficially" cleaned every other day. DIVES: Corals are rare and not very colorful. Lots of wall dives, with strong currents - sometimes manageable, but sometimes scary/dangerous. Not enough dives in the German Channel and Corner - to avoid the crowds - but felt rushed when finally there. CREW: Cruise directors are 5 stars - great people, very concerned with safety and extremely attentive to conditions / surroundings. Chef was local, possibly a newer hire thus a bit of a let down with limited resources - considering the "luxury" experience that is sold by the boat on advertising.
