Frequently Asked Questions About Red Sea Aggressor II

What can be found as the most outstanding diving features in the Northern Red Sea and the Straits of Tiran?

Historically speaking, the dives offered at Northern Red Sea and Straits of Tiran include the most popular ones: Thistlegorm and Abu Nuhas Wrecks. Besides a bunch of historic elements, at Ras Mohamed National Park divers will discover intact coral reefs along with vibrant marine life. The Straits of Tiran, separating the Gulf of Aqaba from the Red Sea, are known for their reefs, bearing the names of British cartographers: Jackson, Woodhouse, Thomas, and Gordon. Extraordinary coral diversity and pelagic species attract many to these waters

What does the Northern Red Sea and Dahab itinerary include?

This is an itinerary that provides the opportunity to dive historic wrecks such as the Thistlegorm, along with famous reefs in Ras Mohamed National Park. In addition, divers will be exploring the famous Blue Hole in Dahab. Up to 20 dives are planned during the week, and for a cultural experience, an optional Bedouin dinner at Abu Galom ashore is possible

What is so special about the Get Wrecked itinerary?

Get Wrecked is a Northern Red Sea Wrecks itinerary that offers up to 12 wrecks and two reef dives. Up to 19 wreck dives is possible to see the historical importance of the Red Sea as a trading route and the wrecks that have resulted from its busy maritime history, especially since the construction of the Suez Canal

Meal and beverages on board

Onboard, the menu offers a selection of Egyptian and local dishes in buffet style. For breakfast, one can find fresh fruits, cereals, and hot entrées, while lunch and dinner offer homemade bread, soups, salads, and entrées of seafood, chicken, or beef. Desserts are offered at night. Any dietary requirements should be conveyed before the trip to accommodate any special needs. Complimentary beverages include water, tea, coffee, and soft drinks. Alcohol drinks are on sale - but no pork products as there is no local supply of this

Water conditions and diving requirements

Water temperatures average between 74°-82°F (23°-28°C). Divers usually wear a 3–5mm wetsuit during summer months and a 7mm wetsuit during winter months. Safety items, which include a dive computer, SMB, and safety sausage, are mandatory and can be rented on board if not already owned. The dive staff has a spot to store personal equipment and uses 12L aluminum tanks with both K-valves and DIN fittings

How are dives conducted and supervised?

Dives are self-guided within the certification limits of the divers and based on the detailed briefings by the dive staff. Plan your dives with your buddy. The in-water staff can assist, spot critters, and/or rescue if required. Tender diving also features a guide in the water with each group to ensure that all divers are present and following the plan. Night dives are possible where conditions allow

OK, not special
The Red Sea Aggressor II is a fairly typical, mid-range Egyptian liveaboard. The main highlight is its relatively spacious and comfortable cabins — each with separate beds (not bunks, as on many other liveaboards, including some within the Aggressor fleet) and a private bathroom where the shower is separated from the toilet, which is not always the case on boats. The main drawback is the rather cramped dive deck. Space is limited for 22 guests, and the benches are not really designed for putting on dive gear while seated, so wetsuits usually have to be donned standing up. Due to the lack of space, only part of the guests have full setups on the dive deck, while around a third of the divers are assigned to gear up on the lower dive platform. Diving is organized for up to 22 guests, either in one or two groups, so expect very large dive groups. As is typical for Aggressor vessels, beer and wine are included in the trip price, which is a nice touch.

Only if heavily discounted
Given that I booked this trip at a massive discount (50%+) from the advertised full-fare price (USD2500+), it was reasonable value for money. Everything was adequate, but fell short of being amazing. Hence, 4 stars but not 5. If I'd paid full price I would score everything lower. The boat is of an older style with a bit of an odd layout: the mini saloon upstairs was practically never used and served as a boutique for most of the week with clothing hung all over it. This layout means there is very little full shade on offer in the seated outdoor areas, only shade-cloth cover which (at least in my case) lead to being constantly wary of catching a sunburn, usually choosing to sit indoors instead. The indoor areas are in general quite dull however with a cramped main saloon and dining area. I had spent the week prior on a kitesurfing trip aboard another liveaboard - a vessel of similar size but with a spacious, bright, modern interior and far more comfortable layout, including a large fully-shaded outdoor area and more functional sun-deck. My week on that liveaboard cost practically the same as the heavily discounted RSA2. The food was fine if not particularly memorable, again my experience the week prior was better. I can't fault the crew - the guides worked hard to ensure everyone would be safe and understood each site and the dive plan. The other crew were always on hand before and after each dive to assist. There was a bit of a push for guests to do courses - very much living up to the other PADI acronym: Put Another Dollar In. All in all a safe week of pleasant diving. One of the other divers, who has done multiple Aggressor trips in the past, remarked at the end of the week that it been "average" and the weakest of his trips with them but that at the price-point that was almost to be expected. Given the sheer number of liveaboards available in the Red Sea and with new boats coming online all the time, Aggressor might be hard-pressed to fill this boat at their full-price fare.
