Day 1:
Onboarding, meeting the crew & briefing.
The Nautilus Explorer will be berthed in Marina Bahia Golfito. It’s beautiful. We imagine you will be excited to board, but please give our hardworking crew time to get the ship turned around, cleaned, fuelled, provisioned, and ready for you. We ask that you take advantage of the local facilities and not drop by the boat until 6:30 pm. We don’t mean to be rude, but it would be much appreciated if you could avoid coming by early to say “hi.” Boarding will begin after 6:30 pm, and we will sail by 8 pm to Corcovado National Park.
Day 2:
Caño Island is an excellent visit and your trip starts out with a heavy day of diving or snorkelling, and kayaking. The island is a protected national park and it’s beautiful. In 2023 we had great luck with humpback whale encounters and we saw hammerhead, white and black-tip reef sharks, mobula and cow nose rays, southern stingrays, moray eels, schooling barracuda, sea turtles, and loads and loads of fish along with coral reefs and a mix of pinnacles, walls, and drop-offs.
Day 3-5:
For the next 3 days, we will be based out of Drake Bay and the Osa Peninsula, mixing it up with a combination of cool shore expeditions plus more diving, snorkelling, and kayaking. Nearby Corcovado National Park is one of the most pristine parks in Costa Rica, including beautiful deserted white sand beaches, old-growth forests, and the chance for rarely seen animals. It’s wet, rugged and remote.
It’s the only place in Costa Rica where you can see 4 different species of monkeys, including the highly endangered red-backed squirrel monkey. Your naturalist is amazing at spotting nearby critters, which might include wild pigs, tapirs, flocks of Scarlett macaw parrots, sloths, and crocodiles in the largest mangroves in Central America. While we won’t see them all, the park is home to 40 species of frogs, more than 100 species of butterflies, and over 375 species of birds, including 16 species of hummingbirds.
Going ashore is like being in a fantasy where you land on the beach by inflatable boat for a hike in the rainforest and waterfalls to emerge onto another beautiful sand beach with your crew waiting with drinks and snacks at the ready.
Day 6:
Check-out from the yacht.
Routes can be affected by adverse weather conditions and unforeseen events, force majeure or other similar reasons
- Flying in early is recommended to experience this wonderful country better. SJO (San Jose International) is the recommended gateway airport. Suppose you prefer to stay over in San Jose. In that case, fleet concierges can assist with a very good deal at the Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belen, and they will provide a complimentary afternoon shuttle van to Golfito on boarding day. However! It is recommended to head immediately south towards Golfito upon arrival in SJC. Sensa Airlines has multiple connecting flights daily, and once you are in Golfito, the hotels are terrific, and there are loads of really interesting day trips.
- Alternatively, you can be assisted with arranging a 3, 4, 5-day, or longer guided driving adventure through the national parks, ending up in Golfito. You could also rent a car and go on your own adventure

Program
Day 1:
Meet & greet at the airport. Group transfer to the port. Onboarding, meeting the crew & briefing.
Day 2:
On your first day out at sea, we’ll be heading out in search of the mobulas. Baja Expeditions has been doing this for 47 years, and our crew is comprised of pioneering old timers who know these waters, and its wildlife, better than anyone. Anyone who is interested can get out and have a freediving lesson; we’ll have you descending to 30-ft by the end of the day. For a more relaxed affair, you can opt to spend your time onboard relaxing on the sundeck with a good book or soaking in the hot tub. We also have kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.
Day 3-4:
For at least two days of the trip, we will be using an aircraft to provide aerial spotting to maximize your encounters with the mobulas and, hopefully, orcas. Our pilot specializes in finding orcas and is the very best in the business. The best place to find them is in the triangle between Espiritu Santo, Carpenter Rock on the west side of Cerralvo, and Las Ventanas on Baja, and we will be focusing our search within this area. Be patient, as it might take ten splashes for the mobulas and orcas to allow snorkelers and freedivers into the middle of the pack, but you’ll be rewarded with truly spectacular encounters. We are only able to launch six divers or snorkelers at one time with the mobulas or orcas to give everyone the best experience. But that doesn’t mean we can’t launch 2 sequential groups of six. You will get as much time as you want in the water. After a delicious lunch on deck, we’ll head back out on the water again in the afternoon. We will keep our support boats running as late as anyone wants up until dusk.
Day 5-7:
For the next couple of days, we’ll be back on our own again to look for mobulas and orcas. In the evening, you’ll have the chance to see the mobula rays in a different light. Literally. There will be the opportunity to go snorkelling at night in a calm, protected bay, where we will suspend lights off the bottom of the boat to attract swarms of mobulas. The mobulas come in to feed on the plankton exposed by the lights, providing a spectacular show against the inky ocean. If you’re a certified diver with your own gear, we can also arrange for you to go night diving.
Day 8:
Check-out from the yacht, group transfer to the airport.
Routes can be affected by adverse weather conditions and unforeseen events, force majeure or other similar reasons
