Carrillo Reef sits in the Sámara and Carrillo coastal area, where shallow Pacific reef and volcanic structure create accessible local diving. It is a good example of Costa Rica’s nearshore style: rugged, fishy, and more naturalistic than highly polished coral-garden destinations.

What to see

Expect reef fish, pufferfish, snappers, grunts, rays, turtles, moray eels, and small invertebrates. Jacks and barracuda may pass through when baitfish are present.

When To Go Diving

December to May usually brings the clearest coastal conditions. Water is generally around 26–29°C, with visibility shaped by swell, river runoff, and wind.
