USS Peary
The USS Peary is an American destroyer sunk by Japanese bombs in Darwin Harbour on February 19, 1942 during World War II. The USS Peary is bit hard to find, so it is a great challenge for all the experienced divers. It is quite dangerous to dive at this site, due to the powerful tides that cause strong currents. History lovers will be impressed with scuba diving at the USS Peary dive site.
When To Go Diving
The climate is tropical in Darwin. There is a wet season and a dry season. The average temperature tends to be about the same all year. The dry season starts in May and ends in September, with a typical temperature of 21-32C/69-89F. The wet season is characterized by temperatures around 25-33C/77-91F, and lasts from November to April.
What to see
The marine life isn’t that spectacular, but there are lots of dangerous species at this site. Divers should be aware that there are box jellyfish from October to May, and crocodiles year-round. In addition to the dangerous species, divers can find queenfish, golden snapper, and jewfish.
