Wheeler Reef, near Townsville’s section of the Great Barrier Reef, is a warm-water reef with shallow to moderate depths. It offers a mix of snorkel-friendly coral areas and deeper sections for certified divers.

What to see

Maori wrasse, clownfish, turtles, reef sharks, parrotfish, angelfish, stingrays, and hard corals may be seen. The reef structure also supports smaller macro subjects around coral rubble and bommies.

When To Go Diving

May to November usually gives the best blend of visibility and settled conditions. Water temperatures generally range from the mid-20s in winter to high-20s in summer.
