Itineraries
Diving at Socorro and the Sea of Cortez offers a diverse range of marine life and underwater landscapes.
Socorro Island is well-known for its big animal encounters, particularly with several species of sharks. Hammerheads, silkies, silvertips, Galapagos, tiger, and oceanic whitetip sharks are commonly spotted around the island. The island is also a gathering spot for giant mantas, with some individuals having wingspans of up to 20 feet. Divers can also expect to see dolphins, whales, and other large pelagic species. The underwater topography at Socorro is characterized by volcanic rock formations, swim-throughs, and pinnacles.
The Sea of Cortez, on the other hand, is home to a plethora of smaller marine life, including colorful reef fish, seahorses, and nudibranchs. Divers can also encounter larger creatures such as sea lions, mobula rays, and even whale sharks in the right season. The dive sites here feature rock formations, walls, and pinnacles covered in vibrant coral and sponge growth. The Sea of Cortez also boasts numerous wrecks, some of which date back to the early 1900s.
Overall, diving at Socorro and the Sea of Cortez offers a unique and unforgettable experience, with opportunities to encounter a wide range of marine life and explore diverse underwater landscapes
When to go
The best time to visit Socorro is from November to June, with the winter months offering a greater chance of spotting whales. Outside of these months, the water temperature is around 23-26°C (73-79°F), and visitors can still expect to encounter mantas and sharks at Socorro Island. The best time to dive in the Sea of Cortez is from July to November. During these months, the water temperature ranges from 26-30°C (79-86°F), making it a comfortable temperature for most divers. This is also the time of year when the largest schools of hammerhead sharks congregate in the area, offering an excellent opportunity to see these magnificent creatures up close. Whale sharks are also more commonly seen during these months, particularly around La Paz and the islands of Espiritu Santo and Isla del Carmen
