Wreck

Carolita Wreck is located close to the shore of Manoel Island in Marsaskala Bay. Carolita, which is also known as X-131 boat, was one of the 200 X-lighters constructed for the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. Later the boat was converted into a water carrier and was used for supplying water to troops. In 1942, while it was moored close to some submarines in Valletta Harbor, it was bombed and sank immediately. The wreck can be reached after a 5 minutes swim from Manoel Island. It lies at a 45 degree angle on a silty bottom, and, though it is a 100 years old wreck, it remains in almost perfect condition. The water visibility on this site, unfortunately, is quite poor because of the silt, but divers will be able to see an abundance of marine life in and all around the wreck.

When To Go Diving

Diving is possible all year round, however, a wetsuit is required for winter diving as the water temperature drops to chilly 14-17C/59-63F. August is the hottest month of the year with the water temperature of 26C/79F.

What to see

Divers can explore a 23m/75ft long wreck of a X-lighter boat and find a lot of interesting things of the times of WWII that are scattered all over the sea bottom, including old beds, armchairs, typewrites, numerous bottles, cans, bullets and other things.
