8 Mile Rock is named for its distance from Ko Lipe. It features a submerged pinnacle that starts at about 15m/49ft and then slopes down to a depth of over 50m/164ft. Visibility can be over 30m/98ft horizontally and up to 45m/147ft vertically. It is recommended to consult local dive operators before diving as currents can be strong.
When To Go Diving
Diving season is between November and April, February through April are the best months to dive this area. The average air temperature stays between 20C/68F and 30C/86F throughout the year. The average water temperature is around 29C/84F.
What to see
Sightings of whale sharks are not unusual here. The pinnacle is densely covered with blue, purple, red soft tree coral. Among the abundance of marine species manta, devil and eagle rays are a common sight along with leopard shark, trevally, giant barracuda and groupers.
