Ilhéu Chão, in the Madeira archipelago, offers rocky island diving with clear water and Atlantic fish life. It has a remote nature-reserve feel compared with busier coastal sites.
What to see
Groupers, barracuda, jacks, wrasse, bream, moray eels, octopus, rays, sponges, and rocky reef life may be seen.
When To Go Diving
Madeira and nearby islands can be dived year-round, but July to November usually brings warmer water, around 21–24°C. Visibility is often very good.
