How to get to the Dixon Cove
Dixon Cove is situated on the south side of Roatán, Islas de la Bahía, Honduras. It is a beautiful town with several hotels, restaurants and shops. Divers can find the largest selection of corals in the Caribbean waters. One of popular dive sites is Insidious Reef. This dive site is for advanced divers. The maximum depth here is 40m/131ft. Schools of glassfish, chubs and Creole wrasse, spotted drums, seahorses, rays, morays, and turtles can be found there. Dixon Cove has two wrecks which are close to each other within the confines of Dixon Cove, and are familiar to all Roatán residents. Both wrecks have been decaying here since the 1970s. Some claim that one ship, with a cargo of lumber, ran aground in a storm. The second ship came to assist, and also sank on the reef. The lumber was collected by local residents. Others say that the cargo was marble. The second version is that the first vessel was sunk intentionally for insurance. Rumors also persist that the ships were involved in the Nicaraguan revolution, and then abandoned. Long-time residents report that the wrecks were two separate incidents. The first ship carried lumber, and the second ship carried paint. Both ships caught fire and were abandoned. The marine life is abundant: nudibranches, seahorses, shrimp, crabs, loads of different reef fish, eels, octopi, sharks, turtles, stingrays, dolphins, whales, hammerheads and manta rays. Whale sharks are also very common in the area.
