Hiva Oa, in the Marquesas, offers a wilder and less reef-lagoon style of diving than the Society Islands or Tuamotus. The underwater scenery is volcanic, remote, and more influenced by open ocean.
What to see
Manta rays, dolphins, reef fish, moray eels, jacks, volcanic rock formations, and occasional sharks may be seen. Coral cover is generally less lagoon-like than in the Tuamotus.
When To Go Diving
The Marquesas can have more variable visibility and conditions than atoll destinations. May to October often brings drier weather, but local sea state matters.
