HMAS J1 Submarine was decommissioned in 1922. The ship was sold, salvaged, and eventually sunk in the waters right off the Melbourne coast. The submarine was built by the British in 1915. During WWI the submarine torpedoed two German dreadnoughts. The ship is 276m/906ft long and can be penetrated.
When To Go Diving
The best diving conditions at HMAS J1 Submarine are from November to March. The visibility inside the wreck is not affected by weather conditions. The sea water temperatures range from 14C/57F during winter to 23C/73F in summer.
What to see
Besides the completely intact exterior of the submarine, the wreck has become home for several types of marine creatures. Divers are likely to encounter Jackson sharks, blue devilfish, sea dragons, and different types of crayfish here.
