Smith Rock
Smiths Rock is a dive site located between Finders Reef and Cape Moreton. This rocky ledge is a menace to ships. The St. Paul, the Marietta Dal, and the Aarhus became victims of this tricky outcropping. Diving at Smiths Rock is a great adventure for divers who want to explore this “ship-killer” and the marine life nearby. There are granite pinnacles, caves, caverns, swim-throughs, and concave areas that shelter different marine species.
When To Go Diving
Moreton Island has a subtropical climate. The summer lasts from November to January, and the winter is May to July. The average temperature is 28C/82F in summer, and 20C/68F in winter. The winter is a better time to dive, because there is less wind and weaker currents.
What to see
Divers can spot crayfish, snapper, and yellowtail kingfish while diving at this site. The sea floor here is covered with rusty and rotting shipwrecks, and even bulldozers can be found.
