Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a coastal town in Talamanca, in Limón Province in southeastern Costa Rica. It is known simply as Puerto Viejo to the locals. Puerto Viejo has recently become a famous tourist destination due to its cultural heritage, white-sand beaches, tropical vegetation and proximity to national parks. It is home to such beautiful beaches as Playa Chiquita, Playa Negra, and Punta Uva. Cahuita National Park and Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge are located nearby. The underwater landscape of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca consists of coral reefs of different shapes and colors which shelter a variety of species of fish. These reefs shelter close to 35 species of corals as well as dolphins, manta rays, sharks and more than a hundred species of reef fish creating a huge bio-diversity unique to Costa Rica. This is also a turtle breeding area. No less than 3 different species, including the giant leatherback turtle inhabit these waters. Puerto Viejo offers around 10 dive sites.The best dive sites here are Monkey Island, Sugar Reef, Bloody Reef and Long Shoal. Abundant sea life in the waters near Puerto Viejo includes angelfish, parrotfish, triggerfish, sharks and a variety of species of jack and snapper among hundreds of other species of fish as well as brown and black coral, sheet coral and lettuce coral.
