LIVEABOARD DIVING IN Vila Franca do Campo
Vila Franca Do Campo is located 0.5km/0.3mi from São Miguel, the Azores' biggest island. The closest airport is João Paulo II that is located in 30 km from Vila Franca do Campo. It is a tiny island shaped like a horseshoe that encircles the lagoon, which used to be a volcano crater at the top of a mountain thousands of years ago. Now the walls of the former crater are covered with forest, and the whole island has the lagoon at its core, which has just about perfect conditions for swimming, snorkeling and diving, and is also registered as a Nature Reserve. The islet is also famous for hosting Red Bull World Series Cliff Diving Competition. Seven diving spots are located near Vila Franca Do Campo, with beautiful landscapes of corals and small caves, a plethora of marine species at a depth of under 30m/98ft and pristine visibility.
Subtle reefs and multiple caves filled with schools of different fish can be spotted at the Ilhéu Oeste site, which is also famous for its good conditions for night diving. Stretches of black corals, a multitude of colorful fish, stingrays, and groupers can be found in the Baixa Do Campo site.
