When to go to Puerto Galera

Puerto Galera is a year-round destination with a tropical climate. The rainy season along with occasional winds and typhoons usually last from June to mid-December. The high season for diving is from mid-December to the end of May. The average air temperature stays around 28C/F throughout the year. The water temperature varies between 24-29C/75-84F. The water visibility varies from 10m/32ft to 30m/98ft and stays at its highest during the diving season. The currents are gentle in most of the local dive sites, but at some may be strong.


What to see

Lots of colorful hard and soft corals, sponges and small gorgonian sea fans can be seen in this area, as well as hundreds of species of tropical fish. Lion fish, surgeon fish, unicorn fish, sweetlips, snapper, scorpionfish, as well as blue spotted sting rays, moray eels, groupers, jacks, barracuda, tuna, trevally, white tip reef sharks, hammerhead sharks and many others can be seen in this area.

Puerto Galera is situated approximately 160km/99mi from Manila on Mindoro Island. The closest airport is in San Jose, that is located in 260 km. Puerto Galera is one of the most popular diving destinations in the Philippines because of the diverse marine life it features. Divers can explore coral reefs, walls, drop offs, caves, canyons, ship wrecks and enjoy muck dives, night dives and drift dives suitable for more experienced divers. The depth of some wrecks, walls and drop offs ranges from 45m/147ft to 100m/398ft. Underwater photographers will be delighted with the wide diversity of colorful sea life occupying the local waters.

Puerto Galera offers around 40 dive sites which are suitable for divers of all levels of experience. The best dive sites are the Canyons, Alma Jane Wreck, Sabang Wrecks, Hole in the Wall, Shark Cave and Verde Island. The most famous dive site is The Canyons, with the depth of 35m/115ft, which can be reached as divers drift past ‘The Hole in the Wall’ site.
