Malitbog is a municipality in the southern part of Leyte Island with a total population of 22 000. The closest airport is in Ormoc, that is located in 145 km from it. The municipality is located along the coast of Sogod Bay, and can be reached within 1 hour by bus from Maasin City and in 45 minutes from Sogod. The municipality of Malitbog is predominantly agricultural, and the major crops are coconut, rice, coffee, peanuts, mangoes, and bananas. Another source of livelihood for people in Malitbog is fishing, and in order to protect the marine resources, several measures have been taken through the Coastal Resource Management Program. The municipality of Malitbog has a number of interesting tourist spots and cultural attractions, including the 17th century baluartes (watch towers) that served as fortifications against Moro pirates, the Roman Catholic church that was built almost 200 years ago, the Pantheon of the Escano family, and the Casa Escano. The municipality also has a number of nature attractions, including beautiful waterfalls in Barangays Candatag and a lot of caves that remain unexplored. Malitbog has beautiful beaches and many beach resorts, where diving is one of the main tourist activities. The most popular dive sites in Malitbog include Bunga Bend, Peter's Mound,, Whip City, the Malitbog wreck, and Padre Burgos Pier, which is famous for incredible night diving opportunities.
