Diving in Kuredu Island
When to go to Kuredu Island
It is enjoyable to scuba dive and snorkel at the island of Kuredu any time of the year, because the pretty constant annual water temperature of 26-29C/78-84F provides comfortable conditions for year-round diving. However, December to March may be a better time to visit Kuredu, because this period has the lowest humidity and the clearest water.
The average annual air temperature is around 30C/86F, and visibility is around 15-30m/49-98ft throughout the year.
What to see
The underwater world around Kuredu will surprise divers with colorful corals, plentiful shoals of fish, and close encounters with friendly sea turtles and various species of sharks. Reef sharks, hammerheads, and sea turtles are seen in this area all year round. However, manta rays and whale sharks can be found in greater numbers in early May.
Scuba diving in Kuredu Island
The island of Kuredu is located at the northernmost point of Lhaviyani Atoll and can be accessed by regular seaplane transfers from Malé International Airport, which take about 40 minutes. Kuredu is fairly large, with approximately 3km/1.9mi of white-sand beaches and aquamarine lagoons, exotic beach bungalows, and spacious water villas. Popular activities on the island include windsurfing and kitesurfing, speedboat excursions, canoes and catamaran sailing, golf courses, badminton, beach volleyball, and, of course, the most popular activities are scuba diving and snorkeling. The underwater topography around the island results in a wide variety of dive sites that will suit the requirements of both experienced and beginner divers. If they are new to Kuredu, divers are advised to do their first dive at the house reef, which can be accessed from the jetty, in order to check weights and refresh their skills before going to more exposed locations with pumping currents. Some of the most popular dive sites around Kuredu are Kuredu Express, Kuredu Caves, Shipyard and Fun Giri.
