When to go to Semporna

Diving in Semporna is possible all year round. The rainy monsoon season is from November through March. The high season is between April to November. The air temperature varies from 23C/73F to 31C/87F The water temperatures stay between 27C/80F and 30C/86F. The visibility varies from 15/49ft to 40m/131ft. The currents are generally mild.

 

What to see

Sightings of sharks and turtles can be guaranteed at many dive sites, also other common sights include manta rays, eagle rays, schooling barracudas and jacks as well as such rare sea creatures like mandarin fish, frog fish, and ghost pipefish.

Scuba diving in Semporna

The Semporna Island Park, also known as Tun Sakaran Marine Park, is located off the east coast of Sabah and consists of dozens of reefs and islands separating the Celebes Sea from the Sulu Sea to the north. The closest airport is Tawau that is located in 105km/65mi from the Semporna. The closest international airport from which you can get to Tawau is Kuala Lumpur. The park is renowned by divers for the diversity of marine life. Popular among divers islands of Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai, Mataking, Boheyan and Mantabuan lie within a close proximity from Semporna and are definitely worth visiting. The diverse dive spots of the area offer drop offs, slopes and plateaus in depths ranging from 2m/6ft to 60m/196ft with sometimes swift currents and visibility between 10m/32ft and 40m/131ft. Some of the worth visiting dive sites are Barracuda Point, Turtle Cavern, South Point and Drop Off.
