Acireale is a coastal city in Sicily, situated on the north-east of the province of Catania, on the coast of the Ionian Sea. Catania Fontanarossa Airport is located in 12 km. It is a diocese, famous for its churches, including the Neo-Gothic St. Peter's Basilica, the 17th century Acireale Cathedral, and a seminary for the training of priests. Marine life in this area is represented by such species as groupers, moray eels, stonefish, crabs, lobsters, barracudas, stingrays, eagle rays, octopus, moray eels, starfish and other creatures. The most popular sites located nearby are Baia Verde and Panettoni, suitable for divers of all levels and Canaloni, Santa Maria La Scala and Capo Mulini wreck (max depth 45m/147ft), recommended for experienced divers. Underwater photography and night diving are also quite popular activities among divers who come here. Visibility is good and usually stays between 10-30m/32-98ft, currents are low.
