All about Half Moon Reserve dive site
The Half Moon is a name of a popular wreck in Miami, which used to be a racing ship called Germania. It was built in 1908 in Germany, then taken by English forces in 1914 as the World War II prize and later became a yacht restaurant in Miami. It was sunk in 1930 and nowadays it belongs to Florida Underwater Archaeological Preserve and is on the list of the US National Register of Historic Places. Diving in this dive site would be very interesting for all the history buffs, but one should keep in mind that it is forbidden to take any souvenirs from the place. Several storms put the remains into a better position, so there is a possibility to observed more details while diving around. Scuba diving in the Half Moon Reserve is perfect for underwater photography.
What to see
Diving in the Half Moon Reserve is interesting not only because of the wreck, but also due to the diversity of marine species hiding under the deck. Divers can encounter sergeant majors, angelfish,yellowtail fish, barracuda, parrotfish, grunts, snappers and groupers.
When To Go Diving
Florida is characterized by a tropical climate. Diving is advisable during the wet and hot season, which lasts from May to October. Usual air temperatures are of 30-32C/86-89F and water - 27-29C/80-84F. Another season is dry and cool with average air and water temperatures of 16-18C/60-64F.
