Garden Eel Cove, on Hawaiʻi Island, is best known for Kona manta night dives, although the site also has a daytime reef profile. It has a distinctive after-dark character when lights attract plankton and manta rays may feed above divers.
What to see
Manta rays may be seen at night, along with garden eels, reef fish, moray eels, butterflyfish, tangs, octopus, and coral patches.
When To Go Diving
Kona diving is possible year-round, with May to October often calmest and warmest. Water is generally around 24–28°C, with visibility commonly 20 metres or more in settled conditions.
