Gangehi Kandu, also known as Gangehi Pass, is another popular dive site in the Maldives, located approximately 3.2km/2mi to the northeast of Mathiveri Island. It is a narrow 2.5km/1.6mi-long channel known to be the longest in the Ari Atoll region. The channel has a sandy bottom. The north part of the channel is covered with rocks and has a small cave. The site also has some colorful reef formations. The Gangehi Kandu site is known for its sharks, despite the fact that it is shallow. Regardless of the shallow depth, the site is only for advanced divers, due to the strong, unpredictable currents.

When To Go Diving

Diving at Gangehi Kandu is possible all year round, but the best time to dive is from December to May, when the sea is predictable and almost never choppy. The average ocean temperature is 26-29C/79-84F all year round.

What to see

At some points on the channel's sea floor there are vibrant small reef formations of soft and hard corals where sea fans can be seen. Some of the most notable fauna species are sharks. These sharks can be spotted quite often: sandbar sharks, whitetip reef sharks, leopard sharks, and whale sharks. Mantis shrimp and shoals of triggerfish are commonly spotted. Stingrays and various species of grouper inhabit the cave, and turtles and manta rays can also be seen occasionally. Between June and August, massive shoals of humphead wrasses can be seen.
