Wreck

The SS Turkia was built in England in 1910, but the original name of this steam cargo ship was Livorno. In 1935 the ship was sold to Greece, and its name was then changed. On her last voyage from New York to Piraeus, the SS Turkia was transporting various cargo, including car tires, vehicles, and explosive materials. It was probably a fire in one of the cargo holds that caused the disaster, because 10 minutes later there was an explosion, and the ship immediately sank. Now the wreck of the SS Turkia lies on a sandy bottom at a depth of 24m/79ft. It is almost intact, but, there are big holes in the hull caused by the explosion. Divers can easily penetrate the wreck and explore any of its areas.

When To Go Diving

It is possible to dive at this site all year round. However, during the winter, when the water temperature is 20C/68F, wearing a wetsuit may be required. The best diving conditions are during the period from July to October, when the water temperature is around 27-29C/81-84F.

What to see

Divers will explore a massive 91m/299-long wreck overgrown with corals and surrounded by schools of fish, including groupers, large mackerel, angelfish, and barracudas. The seabed around the wreck is littered with debris from the wreck, and in the rear part of the wreck divers will see lots of wire wheels and car tires.
