The Giannis D was a general cargo ship built in Japan in 1969. The original name of the ship was the Shoyo Maru, and later the name was changed twice, because the vessel was sold twice. The second time the ship was sold to a Greek company that gave the ship its final name, the Giannis D. In 1983, this freighter collided with the reef and immediately sank with its cargo of timber. Now the wreck lies next to the reef with its stern on the seabed at a depth of about 24m/79ft and its mast at a depth of only 6m/20ft. Divers can penetrate the wreck and explore some of its areas from the inside
When To Go Diving
It is possible to dive at this site any time of the year. The water temperature during the winter ranges from 19-21/66-69F, and during the summer the water temperature rises to 28-29C/82-84F
What to see
While exploring the massive, 100m/328ft-long wreck, divers will see scorpionfish, lionfish, angelfish, glassfish, humphead wrasses, Napoleon wrasses, groupers, and some types of soft corals that have started to colonize the wreck
