Koh Kra
Koh Kra is a small, remote island that lies about 60km/37mi due east of the southern Thai coastline around Nakhon Si Thammarat, 180km/112mi northwest of Losin and 150km/93mi southeast of Samui. Kra is the largest of the three islands in the group. The island is named after the loggerhead turtle, and is one of the few remaining places in the Gulf where they can be seen. Blacktip sharks are also common here, and manta rays have been noted in the area. The rocks are pitted with numerous crevices rich in marine life, and the corals are very healthy and varied, including big tables of staghorn corals co-existing with anemones of all sizes and colors. It is a boat dive, with a depth ranging from 5-30m/16-98ft. This dive site is good for underwater photography and is suitable for experienced divers.
When To Go Diving
The best months to visit are June to August. May is the hottest month, with an average temperature of 30C/85F. The coldest month is January, at 26C/79F. The water temperature is 28-32C/82-90F. The water visibility varies from 5-25m/16-82ft. Currents can be strong.
