About West Sumatra

West Sumatra is a province of Indonesia. It lies on the west coast of the island of Sumatra. Diving in some areas is still being developed and lots of sites remain undiscovered, though there is a great variety of trusted dive sites that are suitable for divers of all levels of experience. Padang, the Mentawi Islands and Weh Island are the most popular diving destinations on the West Sumatra. Among popular diving opportunities divers can find reefs with hard and soft corals, walls, underwater volcano, wrecks and a variety of marine species.

When to go to West Sumatra

Scuba diving in West Sumatra is available all year-round. Best diving conditions last from March to October. The average air temperature stays around 28C/82F. The average water temperature is around 27C/80ft. Water visibility can reach up to 20m/65ft but depends on the currents and is often lower, around 5m/16ft. Currents can be strong in some areas. What to see The marine life in the waters off the West Sumatra includes reef sharks, moray eels, lionfish and scorpionfish, octopus, barracuda, trevally, snapper, fusilier, bannerfish and surgeonfish.
