Tortugas
Tortugas is one of the most popular diving reefs in Playa Del Carmen. It received its name from the sea turtles that frequent this reef. This site is relatively smooth with a gradual slope going from 15m/50ft to 40m/130ft, and is covered with corals and huge barrel sponges. Divers can expect to find nurse shark, angelfish, groupers and tarpons among other types of marine life. The visibility is excellent, more than 30m/98ft. Maximum depth of the site is 40m/131ft. The dive is suitable for divers of all levels of experience. Currents are medium,1-2 knots. The reef is located a short distance away from the shore. It takes a 15min boat ride to get there.
When To Go Diving
The average air temperature varies from 26C/80F to 31C/88F throughout the year. The hottest time of the year is July through August. Summer also happens to be the rainy season. So to avoid the worst heat, rains and high humidity best time to visit Tortugas is from December through March.
