About Stann Creek District

Stann Creek is Belize's second largest district. Diving here is year-round and available for divers of all experience level. The coral formations in a variety of patch reefs, drop-offs, sheer walls and mangrove bays are home to abundant marine life, including scores of fish species, anemones, gorgonians, sponges, turtles, eagle rays and dolphins. The opportunities for snorkeling are abundant and offer a wealth of interesting marine habitats to explore, such as tropical watersheds, lagoons and lakes. Tobacco Caye and Southwater Caye are notable for their locations right on the reef. Caye Marine reserve offers patch reef diving, drop-offs and wall diving. Within the spur and groove canyons and the reef systems hide barracudas, tunicates and eagle rays. The most popular destinations in this region are: Glover’s Reef Atoll, famous for its abundant sea life and beautifully formed coral; Placencia Lagoon is an important breeding area for saltwater crocodiles, marine turtles and the rare and endangered manatees; Hopkins also offers reefs and an abundance of rockfish and abalones as well as many other species of fish.
