About San Andres and Providencia

San Andrés and Providencia is one of the departments of Colombia. It consists of an archipelago of islands, about 775km/480mi north of Colombia and 220km/140mi from the coast of Nicaragua. The largest island of the archipelago is called San Andrés and its capital has the same name. Visitors come here because of the fantastic beaches and some of the best diving in Colombia as well as to discover the unique Raizal culture. San Andrés is more touristy and Providencia is idyllic and remote. Providencia has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Scuba diving is amazing here. San Andrés and Providencia Islands both have great beaches and underwater life including grouper, barracudas, occasional dolphins and sharks, angelfish, blue surgeonfish, butterfly fish, parrot fish, filefish, yellowtail snapper and balloon fish. Divers can explore caves, walls, cliffs and shipwrecks. Clear waters of San Andres and Providencia islands with their untouched coral reefs are perfect for divers of all levels. The islands’ biggest attractions are to be found under the sea, and both Providencia and San Andrés have several reputable diving sites including Trampa Tortuga, La Piramide, Blue Wall, Tete’s Place, Manta’s Place, and Barco Hundido. Blue Wall is considered one of the best sites in the area. It is an amazing dive which consists of a beautiful wall covered with various corals. It is a good place for night diving and underwater photography. The average depth is 20m/66ft and the maximum depth is 40m/131ft. This dive site is suitable for advanced divers only.

When to go to San Andres and Providencia

The scuba diving can be done all year round. Rainy season runs between January and June and strong winds are in this area during the months of June and July. The air temperature varies from 17C/63F to 33C/91F. The water temperature stays between 27C/80F and 30C/86F. The visibility is great, around 30m/98ft, except during the rainy season when it goes down to 10m/33ft. The average depth of the sites varies from 6m/20ft to 40m/130ft. The best time for diving is between February and May, when Green Turtles come to shore to mate.
