About Gulf of Nicoya

The Gulf of Nicoya is a large bay between the Nicoya Peninsula and the Costa Rica mainland along the country’s Pacific coastline. The gulf has shallow, but rich water with great biological diversity. It is encircled by wetlands and cliffs and punctuated by several islands. Diving here is available for experienced divers as well as beginners. Divers may practice snorkeling, scuba diving, liveaboard, wreck diving and cave diving. Warm tropical waters off the Gulf of Nicoya are teeming with abundant marine life, including giant schools of yellowtails, spotted eagle rays, stingrays, angelfish, parrotfish, seahorses, octopuses, needlefish, starfish, frogfish and many species of eels, whitetip sharks, sea turtles, dolphins, and the gentle whale sharks. There are some popular dive sites off the gulf such as: Playa Herradura, Middle Reef, The Garden, The Backyard, Pesebre, The Island, Tortuga Island, etc.

When to go to Gulf of Nicoya

Diving in the Gulf of Nicoya (Pacific coast) is available year-round with water temperatures averaging around 70-80°F / 21-26°C and average water visibility is up to 90 ft / 27 m. The dry season here is from mid-December to April; diving conditions in this period are the best, with good visibility and the opportunity to see giant mantas.
