About Dutch Caribbean Islands

The 'Dutch Caribbean' (often called the Netherlands Antilles) refers to the islands located in the Caribbean Sea that are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Today, the Netherlands Antilles consist of island territories that each have their own island governments. The islands are divided into two geographic groups: the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao) that are located near the Venezuelan coast, and the SSS Islands or the Triple-S Islands (Saba, Sint Maarten, and Sint Eustatius), which are in the Leeward Islands. The islands are very popular with tourists because of the many opportunities and activities. There are a variety of interesting sights, typical Dutch architecture, local culture, traditions, and cuisine to be discovered. The Dutch Caribbean Islands are also world-famous destinations with scuba divers. The Dutch Caribbean has some of the best diving in the world, with perfect weather and water conditions. Here, divers of different levels of experience can find some interesting dive sites to explore. The most popular diving locations are Curaçao, Bonaire, and Aruba. Curaçao offers around 40 unique dive areas and over 65 dive sites that consist of coral reefs, shipwrecks, and rich underwater life. Bonaire is one of the top dive sites destinations in the world. The variety and abundance of marine life in the waters off Bonaire is astonishing, with more than 470 fish species. Aruba is one of the world’s premier wreck-diving destinations. Some of the most popular dive sites in the Dutch Caribbean Islands are Superior Producer, Playa Kalki (Alice in Wonderland), Mushroom Forest, 1000 Steps, Bari Reef, Forest, Hilma Hooker, Pedernales wreck, Natural Bridge, and Antilla.

When to go to Dutch Caribbean Islands

The Dutch Caribbean Islands are year-round destinations. The average air temperature is 28C/82F. Scuba diving off the Islands is available throughout the year. The average water temperature is around 25C/77F. Water visibility often averages over 30m/100ft, and frequently is up to 55m/150ft. There is almost no rain during the year. The islands are located outside the hurricane belt.

 

What to see

Marine life off the Islands is a diverse and includes some unique species. Here it is possible to see turtles, manta rays, stingrays, eagle rays, grouper, barracudas, moray eels, and octopi, as well as brain and star coral, sea fans, barrel sponges, and abundant reef fish, like yellowtails, scorpionfish, and jacks.
