Veligandu North
The Veligandu North dive site of Maldives is located on the top of the reef, which is divided in two parts by a sandy plateau at a depth of around 5-9m/16-30ft. The plateau ends with a beautiful, steep wall that drops sharply to a depth of 20m/66ft. By descending along the wall covered in rich coral life, divers will find some interesting overhangs at different depths from 12-16m/39-52ft. The overhangs are inhabited by thousands of glassfish, and sometimes these dense shoals of fish can make it quite difficult to spot some other interesting reef inhabitants, such as ghost pipefish, lobsters, and moray eels.
When To Go Diving
Divers can dive at this site all year round, because the average water temperature of 26-29C/79-84F provides comfortable diving conditions throughout the year. However, the best period to visit this site is from December to May, when the seas are calmer.
What to see
At this dive site, divers will enjoy observing the rich coral life and dense shoals of reef fish, and if they look carefully, they can find ghost pipefish, leaf fish, lobsters, and some types of moray eels, including rare honeycomb moray eels. Divers also need to watch out for passing barracudas, stingrays, and sharks.
