Cenote Dos Ojos
Dos Ojos is one of the top ten largest cave systems in the world, situated about 14km/9mi south of Tulum. The name “Dos Ojos” means two eyes, and refers to two neighboring cenotes which connect into a very large cavern zone shared between the two. The huge system need two different dives to be discovered. The first dive, Barbie Line, contains plenty of daylight, while the other dive, Bat Cavern, is a dark cave, where lots of bats can be seen. Generally, this geological formation is more than 6,000 years old and consists of meandering passages, whose exploration began in 1986, and since than, only 61km/38mi have been explored. Spectacular snorkeling and diving, available fo all diving levels can be done here. Even in an IMAX film “Journey Into Amazing Caves”, in 2002, some of the caves from this system were featured.
When To Go Diving
It is possible to dive Cenote Dos Ojos all year long. The average air temperature stays between 25-30C/77-86F. The average water temperature is around 24-25C/77F.
What to see
The crystalline waters of the site give the feeling of flight, while giving divers a chance to explore the world of limestone caves, stalactites, stalagmites, collapsed sinkholes and the play of light and colors on the walls of the cavern. There are a few varieties of fish living in the cavern and two types of freshwater shrimp.
