Shotgun, also known as the Cauldron, is located in the channel between the islands and the mainland. The bottom is composed of corals that form walls lined with beautiful yellow-colored corals. Except for the coral garden that is said to be one of the most magnificent in Komodo, the site is known to be a kind of bottleneck through which huge currents of water flow, which make the site quite a challenging dive that requires both skill and experience. For this reason, this site is only recommended for skilled divers. Because of this, this dive has been referred to as an “adrenalin dive.”
When To Go Diving
The best time to dive at the Shotgun site is April through November, although the climate is fine for diving year-round. The water temperature averages 25-27C/77-81F. The best time to spot manta rays at this site is December through February.
What to see
Some of the marine life seen here includes colorful soft corals, sea fans, sponges, anemones, manta rays, snapper, turtles, bumphead parrotfish, anchovies, trevallies, tuna, stingrays, sharks, and eels.
