Scuba diving in Yala Rock


Yala Rock is a must-see dive site in Weligama Bay south of Sri Lanka. The attractions of this spot are 20m/66ft rock formations that go below the surface for 5m/16ft. Divers of any level can try the Yala Rock dive site, and it is also good for snorkeling. Adventurous swim-throughs in underwater caves and circling around the rock could be interesting as well for advanced divers.
When to go
The prime season to dive at Yala Rock is December through April. The best period to encounter dolphins and sharks is November to mid-April. The average water temperature is and the same as the average air temperature, 27C/81F.
What to see
Along the rocks there are stonefish, lionfish, Napoleon parrotfish, nudibranchs, whales, turtles, and lobsters. Fusiliers and schools of snapper may surround underwater visitors as they stop near the mountain.
