About Thasos

Thassos Island is located in the northern part of the Aegean Sea, 15km/9.3mi south of Kavala and separated from the mainland (the Balkan Peninsula) by the Strait of Thassos. Thassos is the perfect place for diving, for both beginners and professional divers. Divers associate Thassos with an incredible attraction known as the Volcano’s Tears, which formed at the bottom of the Aegean Sea as a result of lava encountering the sea water. This place still makes a big impression on everyone who visits it (for more experienced divers). Popular dive spots are in the lagoon: San Antonio (San Antonio Wall, San Antonio Cave, San Antonia Reef), Kefalas Bay, the island of Virgin Mary, Seagull Island, and Rock Prinos, at the northern part of the island. San Antonio Wall is an amazing dive site, where the dive starts at 5m/16ft, and from there it goes on down to 23m/75ft. In this slow descent, divers can see morays, little blue tuna, huge tuna (with a little luck), red-orange corals, sponges, and my favorite, grouper. It is also possible to get into a sunken ship. The best diving centers are located at Island Pefkari near Thassos, the village Potos, and the village Limenaria. There is also a sunken city 8km/5mi south of the island, at a depth of 100m/328ft, which archaeologists have not yet begun to study.

When to go to Thasos

The climate is mild and Mediterranean, with warm, wet winters (average January temperature is 10C/50F) and hot, dry summers (average temperature of 30C/50F). The ideal time for diving is from June to September, when the water temperature is between 23-25C/73-77F, and the air temperature is 29-31C/84-87F.

What to see

Plunging into the water off the coast of Thassos, the diver will see an amazing realm of fish, octopi, grouper, sea urchins, tuna, as well as explore corals, sponges.
