When to go to Negombo
Negombo is situated on the west coast of Sri Lanka and offers its warm waters for diving from November till May. The average water temperature is quite high and ranges between 25C/77F and 30C/86F. The air temperature varies between 25C/77F-28C/82F with high relative humidity of more than 75%. The rainy season, typical for this area, comes together with the monsoon season and lasts from May till September. It is recommended to visit Negombo after the monsoon season is over and the water becomes clearer and its visibility reaches up to 25m/82ft. What to see Shallow sites are great for macro photography with their abundance of coral formations and small exotic fish including sweetlips, parrotfish and porcupine fish. Deeper and more difficult dives, further away from the shore, may shelter such predators like cardinalfish, lionfish, groupers, bullseyes, scorpionfish, stingrays, cuttlefish and many more. The local flora includes corals, sponges, purple fans and anemones. It is also easy to spot starfish, lobsters, crabs and other small creatures that hide between the rocks.

Negombo is a major tourist destination in Sri Lanka, located on the west coast of the island and at the mouth of the Negombo Lagoon, in Western Province. Negombo serves as an ideal diving ground for divers of all levels of experience who come here to enjoy reefs, rocky barriers, wrecks and caves. There are lots of marine species either on shallow and deep sites. Most popular dive sites The major dive sites around Negombo are Diyamba Gala, Lobster Reef, Ahas Yatra Gala with its sunken British Fighter Aircraft, Barracuda Point and Derana Gala. Another local attraction is an oceanic highway of the dive site Route 66 heading North West.
