Frequently Asked Questions About Pacific Master
What can be expected from the Truk Lagoon diving itineraries?
Diving schedules for Truk Lagoon are generally set around the wrecks from World War II at depths that average 25-35 meters. Most wrecks can be dived by recreational divers; however, specific features may require advanced or technical certifications due to their deeper location. The lagoon also offers reef dives in channels where a variety of sharks and pelagic species can be seen
What are the minimum certification and experience requirements to dive in Truk Lagoon?
Recreational divers: PADI Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent with at least 50 logged dives. Deep Diver Specialty (40 meters) very highly recommended. Technical and rebreather divers must hold the appropriate certifications and suitable experience for the planned depth and type of diving. Certification must be proved on boarding and all guests must be covered by insurance that compensates for emergency evacuation and recompression chamber treatment
What's so special about the Truk Lagoon wrecks?
During WWII, Truk Lagoon was used as the major naval base where the action codenamed Operation Hailstone took place in 1944 and resulted in 51 ships and several aircraft getting sunk. These include Japanese military supply-carrying transport vessels and merchant vessels reinforced with anti-aircraft weapons; personal belongings and remains of lifelike things can be viewed inside the wrecks. While most wrecks are accessible to recreational divers, deeper sections may require advanced technical diving skills
What support is available for rebreather divers in Truk Lagoon?
Booster pumps for CCR cylinder fills are available for rebreather divers up to 165 bar/2300 psi and CO2 absorbent (Sofnolime) in 20kg tubs. It must be ordered in advance. Oxygen purity up to 93%, and helium is available for CCR divers only. All gas supplies are charged per fill, and Trimix is not available for open circuit divers.
Water Temperature and Exposure Suits
What protection is necessary for a dive in Truk Lagoon?
Water temperature varies from 28 to 30°C, or 82 to 86°F through the year. The ordinary tourist and sport diver should find protection in a 3mm suit, while the technical diver needs better protection, taking longer bottom times and making use of longer decompression times. A full-length suit will protect from possible contact with metal and wooden parts of wrecks
What are the conditions like to dive Bikini Atoll?
Bikini Atoll offers wrecks at an average depth of 50 meters, or 150 feet, and are for technical divers with prior experience. Itineraries will be oriented towards deep wrecks and are intended for divers with the required certifications and training only
What are the minimum requirements for diving in Bikini Atoll?
All divers must have at least 100 logged dives and wreck diving experience. Open Circuit divers: TDI Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures or equivalent. Rebreather divers: TDI CCR Air Diluent Decompression or CCR Helitrox Diver - 45 meters. Wreck penetration: proof of technical overhead environment training
