Scuba diving in Herceg Novi
The town Herceg Novi, earlier called Castrum Novum and Castel Nuovo, is situated between Mount Orjen and the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. The closest airport is in Dubrovnik, from there you got to get bus to Herceg Novi (50 km). The town received its name during the rule of Herzeg Stjepan Vukčić Kosača who developed the town and made it flourish. Mane people say that this is a town of “the eternal greenery, sun and promenades" as it is full of dense Mediterranean greenery, numerous mimosa trees (the world famous "Mimosa Festival" takes place here) and great beaches ( such as Mirista, Zanjic and Rose beaches, which are ideal for divers). Herceg Novi also attracts tourists with its great restaurants, vibrant nightlife and fantastic diving opportunities. The nearby island of Mamula is a great destination as well, presenting divers with more interesting sites and the remains of an old fortress. In Herceg Novi there are several diving schools where divers can rent equipment and hire an instructor who will explain the basics of diving. On the outskirts of Herceg Novi there are many popular underwater sights, among which the most interesting are caves (Blue Cave, City of Poseidon and Mermaid's Cave), wall Ponte Veslo, wrecks (Patrol Boat and Tihany Italian cargo ship, ) and the place called Gorgonians (max depth 30m/98ft) where beautiful corals can be explored. The average depth of the water here is 27m/80ft, with the maximum depth of around 61m/200ft.
