"The water temperature flactuates between 25C/77F and 27C/81F in February and from 20C/68F to 22C/72F in August. The water visibility is good. February is the hottest month on the island with air temperature staying around 28C/82F and the coldest month is July with the average air temperature being around 22C/72F. "

Scuba diving in Saint-Leu

Saint-Leu is a commune in the French overseas departments of Reunion. It is located on the west side of the island of Reunion. The closest airport is Pierrefonds Airport, that is located in 12 km. Saint-Leu is known for its beautiful coral formations which are home to many colorful tropical fish. Diving in this area is available for divers of all experience levels. There are various types of diving available including drift dive, wall, deep dive, reef and ambiance. The best dive sites are Passe de Trois Bassins, La grotte à Nono, Jardin des Pirates, Grand Tombant de la Pointe au Sel, Navarra and Le Sec Jaune. La Pointe au Sel, for example, is an underwater coral formation ranging from 25m/82ft to 60m/197ft in depth. The huge drop-off starts around 25m/82ft and ends at 71m/233ft. This site is considered the best dive site on La Reunion. The schools of trevallies, tunas, barracudas and even manta rays, devil rays, John Dory, Napoleon wrasse, Mako shark, lemon shark and occasionally dolphins and whale-sharks can be seen a this site. Another popular dive site is Le Sec Jaune. It features hard coral as well as soft coral, brain coral, yellow gorgonian fan, ascidians and encrusting algae that can all be found in the area. The depth of the site is from 10m/33ft to 20m/66ft. The marine life is very diverse and includs stingrays, eagle rays, devil rays, turtles, groupers, batfish, parrotfish, nudibranchs and flutemouth.
