When to go to Rakiraki
The year is roughly divided in two seasons: wet and dry. Visibility is the best during the dry season, between May and October, with water temperature staying between 24C/75F and 27C/80. September to November is the best chance to spot whales. The wet season runs from November to April, when the water temperature reaches up to 30C/86F. The average daytime air temperature is around 28C/82F. Visibility is high, 20-30m/65-98ft.
What to see
Among brightly colored tropical reef fish divers can see Moorish idols, damsels, butterflyfish, red emperors and others. Among larger fish, divers can spot schools of barracuda, trevally, rock cod, different shark species (black tip, white tip, bronze whalers and grey reef sharks) and mantas.
Scuba diving in Rakiraki
The Rakiraki is located in the northern heart of Fiji's main island Viti Levu, in about two hours from Nadi International Airport. Rakiraki is the top quality diving renowned for the incredible variety of sea life, an abundance of color and pristine conditions. Rakiraki and the islands nearby have some impressive hard coral structures, gardens of giant sea fans, fields of vibrant soft corals and are excellent for both macro and pelagic marine life. Dive sites of Rakiraki are suitable for beginners (Volivoli Beach is a great place to learn to dive) as well as experienced divers, with depth varying from 5m/16ft to 30m/98ft. Local sites, that are easily accessible from the land, offer a wide range of diving experiences, including swim-throughs, walls, reefs and impressive pinnacles. Further afield the are highly-rated sites of Vatu-I-Ra Passage in Bligh Water. Generally, there are more than 50 dive sites in this area, the nearest are Breathtaker, Amazing Maze and Golden Dream, a bit further - Instant Replay, E6, Black Magic Mountain, Pot Luck, Mellow Yellow, Wheatfield and others. It is a great place for underwater photography. Currents are moderate to strong.
