Liveaboard diving in
Massa d’Or
The Massa d’Or, also known locally as Sa Rata ('the rat'), is a small island off the eastern point of Cap de Creus. The dive site features a wall covered in red corals and gorgonians all the way down to a rocky seabed at a depth of around 70m/230ft. Due to the exposed location, the dive site also features unpredictable currents, which can become very strong. What is predictable, though, is the clear visibility, meaning that the dive will be enjoyable for experienced divers, because they will be able to spot a great number of interesting marine species.
When To Go Diving
Divers can dive at Massa d'Or any time of the year. However, the most comfortable diving conditions are during the summer, when the water temperature rises to 25-26C/77-79F. In winter the water temperature can drop down to 13-14C/55-57F.
What to see
The waters around the island are exceptionally rich in bigger fish, such as giant groupers and barracudas that sometimes number in the thousands. Other marine species include beautiful red gorgonians, nudibranchs, dentexes, sea bream, and tuna.
