Legendary wreck
The Baron Gautsch was a famous steamship built in 1908. It was 84m/275ft long, with a beam of 11m/38ft. In 1914, the ship hit a mine on the open sea near Rovinj and sank within minutes, taking passengers with it. The ship lies vertically at 40m/131ft. A viewing of the ship starts from the stern and up to the bow and into the wreck through the top deck, where the steel construction is still clearly visible. The ship is now an artificial reef and home for numerous species of flora and fauna. It is a protected national cultural heritage site and diving is only possible through authorized dive centers.
