When To Go Diving
The surface water temperature reaches up to 22C/72F during the summer months but stays around 17C/63F at the bottom. The average air temperature is about 25C/77F June through September.
What to see
Ilheu da Forja is located right in front of the coast of Funcal, Madeira. The site is known for its wreck of a steamship that was torpedoed during the WWI near the port of Funchal. The history lovers and fans of marine biology may want to see the boilers and the engine room of the ship which is still in a good condition. The boilers and the engine room are the main places where the fish aggregates. Groupers, barracuda, mackerel and mantas are just a few of the numerous species living here. Snorkeling is also possible at this site. Divers of all experience levels including children will enjoy this site. The average depth of the site is 10m/32ft with the maximum of 20m/65ft. Visibility is good, 10m/32ft -30m/98ft. Currents are low (<1 knot). Because this site has an easy access from the shore there occasionaly can be weekend crowds visiting it. Ilheu da Forja is also a good spot for shark watching.
