Cape Verde`s underwater world consists of caves, canyons, massive rock formations, ledges and sharp drop-offs. The rich tropical underwater flora and a massive array of fish in the waters off Cape Verde include shoals of rockfish, bream, dolphins, turtles, cat sharks, tiger, lemon, hammerhead, mako sharks and various corals. Types of diving include cave diving and reef diving, drift dives are also common along majestic walls in the currents of Boa Vista waters. Night dives are available at most inshore locations. Excellent wreck sites offer for exploration over 70 known shipwrecks that range from the 16th to 19th century. Most of the dive sites are located close to shore and can be reached by a short boat ride. Some of the dive sites have earned a great reputation among the diving enthusiasts and include the fantastic wall of Cavala; Tres Grottes that can be dived by day and night; Pontinha and its vertical rock face; Boris, an old Russian trawler; the Buracona cave and Chuklassa. Most of the dive operators are concentrated on Sal, especially on the south and west coast where there are over 25 dive sites available.
