What makes Lembeh different is the pace. Many dives happen over seemingly plain sand or broken bottom, but that is exactly where the best finds appear. A good guide may stop the group over a patch of rubble that looks empty at first, then point out a frogfish, a tiny shrimp, or a perfectly camouflaged octopus within seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Is Muck Diving?<\/b><\/h2><\/div>

Muck diving means searching for marine life over sand, silt, rubble, seagrass, or volcanic slopes rather than classic coral reefs. It may not look impressive at first glance, but this kind of bottom is exactly where many of the ocean\u2019s strangest small creatures live.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Lembeh, muck diving usually means slow, shallow dives over black volcanic sand, rubble, discarded objects, small debris, and sheltered slopes. Look carefully. A patch of rubble that looks bare often holds something: a frogfish, a shrimp, a camouflaged octopus.\u00a0 These things can be almost invisible until a guide points them out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some Lembeh sites can look exactly like the word \u201cmuck\u201d suggests. Bitung is a working port area, and over the years debris such as bottles, cans, tyres, and other discarded objects has ended up in the strait. It is not the polished image of tropical reef diving, but these messy habitats are often where the most unusual finds appear. A bottle, shell, tyre, or old container may already be home to an octopus, shrimp, goby, or other small animal.<\/span><\/p>\n
