Scuba diving in San Pedro
San Pedro is the only town on the southeastern coast of Ambergris Caye. The closest international airport is in Belieze City from where you could either fly to San Pedro (faster) or take a boat (cheaper). San Pedro is the most popular tourist destination in Belize due to its natural surroundings and historic heritage. The Belize Barrier Reef, which is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, stretches along the coast of San Pedro. The reef runs parallel to the coast like gigantic wall, its corals forming multiple canyons and arches, creating a beautiful underwater landscape. The inherent characteristic of diving in this area is the proximity of the dive sites to the Caye coast. Most of them can be reached in 30 minutes or less. The underwater coastline is perfect for shallow diving but depth increases outside the reef. The northern part of the reef, located east of San Pedro, is perfect for macro diving. There are over 40 dive sites near San Pedro, the best being: Cyprus Gardens, Shark and Ray Alley, Christ of the abyss, Eagle Ray Canyons, Esmeralda and Pillar Corals. Divers can also dive at more distant sites, e.g., Spanish Bay Wall, The Blue Hole, The Black Hole and Turneffe Atoll. Here divers can spot hard corals, gorgonians, sea fans, tunicates, shellfish, large stingrays, whale sharks, manta rays, spotted eagle rays and hammerhead sharks; even reef sharks and white tip sharks can be seen occasionally.
